Senior Planner for Wildfire Resilience & Disaster Recovery at the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation

Michael is a Senior Planner for Wildfire Resilience & Disaster Recovery at the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation, formerly OPR. Michael manages the office’s Wildfire Resilience and Disaster Response portfolio and administers the Forest Sector Market Development Grant Program. In this role, he is responsible for coordinating with LCI staff to update the state’s wildfire resilience planning guidance, as well implementing the state’s Forest Sector Market Development grant program as directed under Key Action 3.10 of the Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan. Previously, Michael managed the Wildfire Resilience and Recovery Planning Grant Program, as well as the Biochar Research Advisory Committee as part of the office’s larger wildfire prevention, disaster recovery, biomass utilization and forest management portfolio. Michael currently represents LCI on several interagency committees. He is an Advisory Council member at the Joint Institute for Wood Products Innovation at the California Board of Forestry, as well as an executive committee member of the Wildfire Mitigation Advisory Committee (WMAC) at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Under WMAC, Michael serves as the co-chair of the Land Use Planning Working Group. Additionally, Michael is a member of several working groups under the Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force, such as the Risk Modeling Working Group, The Fire Adapted Communities Working Group, and the Wood Utilization Working Group. Michael also serves as LCI’s representative on the Community Planning and Capacity Building – Recovery Support Function (CPCB – RSF) in coordination with Cal OES and FEMA, where he works to support local and Tribal governments to identify gaps in their recovery capabilities and to assist them with establishing recovery solutions. Michael has a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of California, Davis.
